A Kansas City man who in November 2017 was driving at 2 a.m. the wrong way on U.S. 71 Highway near Interstate 435, resulting in a collision that killed Laura and Ryan Humphrey was sentenced today to 26 years in prison, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Preston E. Moore, dob: 10/29/1988, who pleaded in July was sentenced today by a Jackson County judge to 13 years on each count of DWI -- causing the death of another. The judge set those 13-year sentences to run consecutive to each other, for a total sentence of 26 years. The judge also sentenced Moore to five years on a separate DWI count, which the judge set to run concurrently to the 26 years.
According to court records, the Humphreys were driving northbound on U.S. 71 at Interstate 435 after 2 a.m. when they crashed with a vehicle driven by Moore. They sustained deadly injuries and Moore also was injured. Witnesses told police that the vehicle driven by Moore was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes at a high rate of speed. An open liquor bottle was found in the vehicle driven by Moore. Toxicology results showed Moore with an elevated level of alcohol. Moore has a previous DWI conviction.
