The Jackson County Prosecutor's Office has filed felony charges against a south Kansas City man who fatally shot a woman at his apartment complex, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Maurice P. Jacques, dob: 2/15/1984, faces Murder 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action charges.*
According to court records, on May 22, 2023, just before 3 a.m., Kansas City police officers responded to an apartment complex in the 9500 block of Bales on a report of a shooting. Officers found the victim on the ground in the breezeway outside an apartment at the complex.The victim, a woman, appeared to be suffering from a gunshot. The victim was later declared deceased at a hospital. Police also found a bullet hole in the front apartment door directly across from the defendant's apartment. A witness told police the defendant had been involved in the shooting. The defendant gave consent to search his apartment. A spent shell casing was collected. He told police he had put the gun in a safe. Detectives determined from physical evidence that the defendant's door was open when he fired the weapon. There was no bullet damage to his front door. In addition, a witness told police the defendant informed him someone had tried to break in and he shot the person.
The victim's mother, according to court records, told police that the victim was homeless.
Charges initially were filed June 16, 2023, under seal. The seal was lifted on Friday.
