A Jackson County judge has found an Overland Park, Kan., man guilty of Rape 1st Degree for allegedly raping a patient while the defendant was working as a nurse at an Independence hospital, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
The judge convicted Chukwuemeka U. Emmanuel, dob: 12/25/1983, of Rape or Attempted Rape 1st Degree, after a bench trial.* The judge will set a sentence at a Jan. 27, 2021, hearing.
According to court documents filed today, a patient at Centerpoint Hospital in Independence reported to Independence police that she was raped by her nurse, who police identified as the defendant. The victim told police the nurse had been cleaning her when he inserted his fingers and his penis into her vagina. At the time, the patient was being given morphine and other narcotics for pain management. The victim said she told the defendant several times that he was hurting her and she asked him to stop. Another nurse at Centerpoint, who told police she is in a relationship with the defendant, stated that the defendant called her and told her he was going to Nigeria because he had been accused of a rape. She believed he was in New York or Nigeria.
Assistant Prosecuting Attorneys Devin Ledom and Kelsey Blackwell prosecuted the case on behalf of the state of Missouri.
