A Kansas City man and an Independence woman have been charged in the Dec. 30, 2017 fatal shooting of Steven L. Ragsdale Jr., who was shot outside an apartment complex in Independence, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
David K. Racy III, dob: 7/20/1992, of Kansas City, faces Murder 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action, while Valincia R. Alexander, dob: 4/6/1993, of Independence, faces Murder 2nd Degree Felony Murder and Armed Criminal Action.*
According to court records, Alexander solicited via social media to buy marijuana from Racy. She and Ragsdale, she told police, intended to steal some of Racy's marijuana. He came to the residence and she offered him a fake $100 bill. Ragsdale was outside the apartment complex when Alexander handed Racy the fake money, grabbed a bag of marijuana and took off running. Shots were fired and Ragsdale was hit. When police responded to the scene, they found Ragsdale suffering from gunshots and he died at the scene.
Charging documents against Racy and Alexander were sealed until today by order of the court.
Prosecutors requested $200,000 bonds on each defendant.
