A Jackson County judge on Tuesday sentenced a Tulsa, Okla., man to life in prison for beating a 68-year-old man so severely on May 1, 2023, outside a Kansas City hotel, that the victim died in July, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Andrew Wilson was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. In October 2024, Wilson entered a guilty plea to the charge of Murder in the 2nd Degree, as part of a plea agreement. A sentencing range of 20 years up to life in prison with the possibility of parole was also part of the agreement.
Prosecutors argued in a sentencing memorandum that "the severity and circumstances of this crime merits the maximum possible sentence under the plea agreement."
On Tuesday, a Jackson County judge sentenced the defendant to that maximum sentence.
According to court documents, on May 1, 2023 in the early morning, officers were dispatched to a hotel in Kansas City. The victim was 68 years old and he was found bleeding on the ground. He was able to tell officers an unknown man attacked him. The suspect was identified as Andrew Wilson. Surveillance video captured the assault, with punching and kicking lasting more than 10 minutes. The victim remained in the hospital until he died on July 17. He was 69. The defendant was arrested on May 1, 2023. He still had the victim's blood on his shoes, and told the arresting officer he beat the man.
An assault charge was then upgraded by prosecutors to Murder in the 2nd Degree.
Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Caitlin Brock prosecuted the case on behalf of the state of Missouri.
