Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson today announced charges against a man in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred in Grandview last year.
Steffon L. Smith faces 2nd Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action. *
According to court records, Grandview officers were dispatched to a residence in Grandview on July 6, 2024, on a reported shooting. Officers located the victim on the ground unresponsive, lying between two vehicles. The victim sustained two gunshot wounds and was declared deceased on the scene.
Detectives connected the defendant to the shooting based on his DNA found on a hat left at the crime scene and on the victim’s hands, and cell phone data, which showed his phone being in the area during the homicide and then leaving shortly after.
In jail calls between the defendant and another party he also indicated that he needed to “be gone” by the time the DNA test results came back.
The defendant is being held without bond.
*Charges are only accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until the defendant is either found guilty or pleads guilty.
