A 24-year-old Kansas City man has been charged in the Saturday fatal shooting of Jesse Young who was found on the steps of a residence in the 2300 block of 9th Street, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Marlawn D. Betts, dob: 5/7/1994, faces Murder 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action charges.*
According to court records, Kansas City police found the victim at the bottom of the steps near 2320 E. 9th Street. His death was ruled a homicide. The suspect told police that the victim threw a backpack and a punch at him with his right hand, while he shot at him with a gun in his left. The defendant said he fired two shots at the victim and left the scene. But police found no evidence to support the victim being armed with a gun. And no witness stated the victim was armed.
Prosecutors requested a bond of $250,000 cash only.
