A 20-year-old Kansas City man has been charged in the fatal shooting Wednesday of Bernice Brown after an argument between the defendant and the victim's son, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Tyjuan K. Caldwell, dob: 6/12/1998, faces Murder 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action charges.*
According to court documents, police responded the afternoon of Aug. 1, 2018, to the area of 50th and Chestnut on a reported shots fired call. They found the victim, Bernice Brown, fatally wounded by a gunshot and in the street. Her death was ruled a homicide by the Jackson County Medical Examiner. Several witnesses said there had been an argument involving the defendant and relatives of the victim. The defendant told police he ran outside where several people were arguing after he had grabbed a gun inside. He fired the gun at a man he had argued with earlier, and the victim jumped into the line of fire, he stated.
Prosecutors requested a bond of $250,000.
