Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson today announced a Jackson County judge sentenced a Kansas City man last week to 25 years in prison for a fatal shooting that took place at a park in Blue Springs last year.
Marquis E. Savannah pled guilty to Voluntary Manslaughter and Armed Criminal Action. Both charges will be served consecutively for a total of 25 years.
“Two young lives were cut short, and another young person will now spend decades behind bars as a consequence of his actions. Violence will never be tolerated, regardless of one’s age,” said Prosecutor Johnson. “Our office remains committed to seeking justice for victims and their families.”
According to court records, Blue Springs police responded to a local park and found two gunshot victims on April 13 last year. The victims were later pronounced deceased at an area hospital.
A review of cameras in the park showed a verbal altercation between several subjects. Detectives determined the defendant charged one of the victims and they began to fight. A firearm is dropped during the altercation and the defendant picks it up and runs away from the victim, then fires at him. Another suspect pulled a gun and fired at the other victim.
