Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson today announced charges against a Kansas City man in connection with a fatal shooting that took place in south Kansas City yesterday morning.
Marcus M. Williams faces 2nd Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action. *
According to court records, Kansas City police were dispatched to an apartment in south Kansas City on July 15 on a reported shooting. The defendant opened the door of the apartment and police observed the victim lying on her back with blood coming from her head. When detectives interviewed the defendant, he said he and the victim were arguing and wrestling over a gun. He said that during the altercation, the victim fell to the ground and that his finger must have been on the trigger at some point as they were fighting. He said she never touched the firearm during the struggle. The gun went off and struck the victim in the head. He said he contacted the police after realizing what happened.
The defendant is in custody on a $200,000/10% bond.
*Charges are only accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until the defendant is either found guilty or pleads guilty.
