For Immediate Release
March 6, 2024
Persons seeking counseling or other services in the wake of recent violence, including the shootings at Union Station on Feb. 14, are encouraged to contact the mental health hotline -- 988 -- to be directed to counseling services, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
A person in the Kansas City area who calls 988 will be connected to a Kansas City-based call center staffed with licensed clinical staff. Responders will be sent out if the caller needs in-person assistance.
The day following the Union Station shootings, the prosecutor's office established a hotline number to help callers with immediate needs. It would be best now, we've determined, to use the 988 system to reach persons needing help. The prosecutor's office also initiated counseling sessions in a variety of locations. Non-profit service providers and staff from the prosecutor's office joined to bring counseling and some comfort to persons impacted emotionally by the tragic violence at the public event.
The prosecutor's office extends its gratitude to all who have helped make these sessions valuable, including COMBAT-funded agencies such as the Ad Hoc Group Against Crime, Mothers In Charge and the Child Protection Center.
