A Leavenworth man has been charged with a Class B DWI felony in the Kansas City fatal vehicular crash on Thursday near 75th and Paseo, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Jason Evans, dob: 8/101/1996, of Leavenworth, Kan., faces Driving While Intoxicated, a Class B felony because it involved the victim of a non-passenger.
According to court records, about 11 p.m. on Thursday, July 13, 2017, Kansas City police responded to a reported crash near 75th and Paseo. They located the driver of one vehicle, the defendant, as being transported to Research Medical Center. The driver of another vehicle, victim Stephen Russell, also was sent to Research but was pronounced dead from his injuries soon after. The defendants vehicle was traveling on Paseo at a high rate of speed and struck the victim's vehicle as it was traveling through an intersection. Hospital staff advised police that the defendant had a strong odor of alcohol.
Prosecutors requested a $100,000 bond.
