A Kansas City woman, 30, has been charged in the fatal shooting of Jenna Nava inside a Kansas City apartment, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Makayla R. Smith, dob: 3/24,1992, faces Murder 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action charges.*
According to court records, Kansas City police were dispatched to the 8800 block of Crystal Lane in Kansas City on a reported shooting. Officers found a female victim in a third floor apartment. Police also found a live 9 mm round and a large kitchen knife. Police noted several reports related to domestic violence incidents that included the victim and her wife, including a current ex-parte order of protection. Witnesses told police that the defendant told them or they saw the defendant shoot the victim after a tussle over the knife. A second suspect had a text conversation with the defendant not long before the shooting. The defendant met the victim and messaged the second suspect, stating "I got the gun to her head right now."
Prosecutors requested a $250,000/10% bond.
