In a new effort to reduce crime, especially violence, KC NoVA and its partners will host a community recap tonight (July 11, 2018) at 7 p.m. at the Milestone Center, 3417 E. 12th Street, in the Northeast area of Kansas City.
In March, KC NoVA partners canvassed more than 450 homes in the Northeast area of Kansas City to identify residents' needs. Among the concerns were crime, abandoned properties, trash and homelessness. Since then, KC NoVA and its partners have attempted to address those issues. A significant reduction in crime, for example, has been reported. Since Jan. 1, 2018, KCPD reports a 24 percent reduction in violent crime -- homicides, rape, robbery and assaults -- compared to the same period in 2017. In addition, stolen auto reports are down 37 percent.
KC NoVA also is in discussion with community leaders about how to sustain these reductions.
The event kicks off at 7 p.m. with a presentation by KC NoVA. KC NoVA or the Kansas City No Violence Alliance is a collaboration of law enforcement and community leaders. It's governing board includes the Kansas City Police Department, FBI, ATF, the U.S. Attorney's Office, the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office, the Missouri Board of Probation and Parole, and the University of Missouri Kansas City.
