A Kansas City man has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in connection with the 2013 fatal stabbing of Corey Laykovich, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
John D. Seger, dob: 6/13/1992, was sentenced Thursday to 9 years in a Missouri prison.
In July 2013, family members of the victim, Corey Laykovich, found him in his Independence residence suffering from stab wounds. He died later at an area hospital. Independence police detectives suspected the defendant might have been involved. In 2016, when the defendant was stopped after a vehicle pursuit with police, detectives asked him about his relationship with the deceased victim. The defendent told police he was in a heated argument with the victim the night ofhis fatal stabbing. He stated he struggled with thevictim after the victim pulled a knife. The victim was stabbed during the struggle.
