A Blue Springs woman who was driving the wrong way on Interstate 70 in Blue Springs on June 24 faces felony charges for driving while intoxicated and causing a crash that killed Heather Blackman, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Desiree C. Smith, dob: 11/07/1981, faces DWI -- Resulting in Death.*
According to court records, Missouri Highway Patrol responded to the scene of this vehicular crash on I-70 near Adams Dairy Parkway in the eastbound lanes. Witnesses told patrol officers that a car passed them driving westbound in the eastbound lanes right before it struck the victim's vehicle. Officers found that the victim, who lived in Jackson County, had suffered fatal injuries and she died at the scene. Officers noticed in the defendant's vehicle a partially consumed bottle of liquor. The defendant was transported to Centerpoint Medical Center for treatment.
Prosecutors requested a bond of $150,000.
