A 26-year-old Kansas City man has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of Alton Hughes near Independence Avenue and Woodland in KC on Nov. 28, 2017, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Malliek D. Hayes, dob:4/2/1993, pleaded guilty to Murder 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action. A judge sentenced the defendant today to 22 years on the murder conviction and 3 years on the Armed Criminal Action conviction. The judge set the sentences to run concurrently.
According to court records, on Nov. 28, 2017, Kansas City police were dispatched to the intersection of Independence Avenue and Woodland. They found the victim suffering from a puncture wound to the chest. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. Witnesses told police reported a fight involved the suspect and the victim. Witnesses reported the defendant stood over the victim and appeared to be striking the victim. The defendant was also observed to put away a knife.Surveillance video from the area showed the defendant at a nearby convenience store. The defendant approached the victim. He attempted to fight the victim and chased him into the street. He left the victim lying in the street.
