According to court records, Kansas City police responded on Aug. 23, 2021 to Independence Avenue in Kansas City's northeast area on a reported shooting and a subsequent vehicular accident. A female driver, Randie Smith, was pronounced deceased at the scene. She had wounds to her wrist and chest. The Jackson County Medical Examiner's Office ruled her death a homicide. During the investigation, detectives recovered 9 mm shell casings from the parking lot of the gas station. Detectives learned that the victim had posted a PlayStation 4 gaming console for sale on Facebook Marketplace. The victim was meeting a potential buyer at the BP gas station and Paseo. She was on the phone with a family member during the incident. Video surveillance showed her parking at the gas station and two males approaching her vehicle. After the victim opened her driver door, the victim and one of the men struggle; the second male goes to the passenger side of her vehicle armed with a handgun, firing it into the front windshield. The victim drove away but lost control, striking a utility pole before overturning. Detectives obtained Facebook messages to connect suspects to the attempted robbery. Black told police he knew a robbery was planned and Muldrew-Golston told police he did something stupid because he was scared.
Prosecutors requested bonds of $300,000 10 percent for Black and $150,000 cash for Mulddrew-Golston.
