A Jackson County jury convicted a Kansas City man of two felonies in connection with a shooting that injured two people in Westport last year, Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson announced today.
The jury convicted Deion D. Crum with Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Armed Criminal Action. The defendant faces a minimum 20-year sentence based on his prior convictions.
According to court records, Kansas City police were dispatched to the intersection of Westport Road and Broadway Boulevard on February 11, 2024, on a reported shooting and found a victim suffering a gunshot wound. Ten minutes later, another gunshot wound victim from the scene and the defendant arrived at local hospitals for treatment for their gunshot injuries.
Based on video obtained from the scene, a male wearing the same clothing and shoes as the defendant punches one of the victims before there is an exchange of gunfire between them. The defendant is seen on video shooting at both victims and was the primary aggressor in the physical altercation preceding the shooting.
Assistant Prosecuting Attorneys Caitlin Brock and Devon Tarantino prosecuted the case on behalf of the state of Missouri.
