Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson today announced felony charges against a Kansas City man for stealing a Kansas City Area Transportation Authority city bus and then assaulting an officer yesterday.
Shahid Pratt was charged with Assault in the 2nd Degree, Stealing a Motor Vehicle, and Tampering in the 1st Degree. *
According to court records, Kansas City police responded to the area of East 75th Street and Prospect Avenue regarding a stolen KCATA bus and observed the defendant in the driver’s seat. Officers gave the defendant multiple verbal commands to exit the bus, and he refused. When officers attempted to unlock the bus doors, the defendant reached out of the driver’s window and struck an officer with a metal bar. Officers were able to use multiple less-lethal options to detain the defendant.
The defendant has 11 prior felony convictions. The defendant is being held on a $50,000 bond.
*Charges are only accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until the defendant is either found guilty or pleads guilty.
