For Immediate Release
Sept. 27, 2023
Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker issued a statement today congratulating the Independence Police Department for winning a new Justice Department grant that will allow the city to purchase body cameras for police officers:
Baker stated: Residents of Jackson County and the city of Independence should acknowledge the necessary and hard work of the Independence Police Department. They worked together, with a little support from my office, to submit a grant proposal this year that has now won approval by officials at the U.S. Department of Justice. This grant will purchase body cameras for every police officer and give the community some extra support to maintain this new equipment.
Research has shown, Baker added, that deployment of body cameras for police officers decreases the number of complaints about officers and incidents of force. This is a great outcome for the community
According to IPD, this grant will be used to deploy 200 cameras starting in January 2024.
