A Kansas City man faces multiple felony charges in connection with fatal shooting in August near 70th and Prospect Avenue in Kansas City, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Derrion S. Turner faces faces Murder in the 2nd Degree, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, two counts of Armed Criminal Action and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.*
According to court documents, on Aug. 5, 2024, officers were dispatched to the area of 70th and Prospect Avenue on reports of shots fired. Six persons sustained gunshot wounds, one fatally struck. The Jackson County Medical Examiner ruled it a homicide. Detectives examined video surveillance from a nearby business and officers determined one male in the video resembled the defendant. He was wearing an ankle monitor after he was released from federal custody. A check of GPS data for the monitor showed he was in the area at the time of the homicide. Video showed him producing a firearm and shooting toward another group. That led to a chaotic exchange of gunfire from multiple people. The gunfire caused multiple injuries and one death.
Prosecutors requested a $250,000 cash bond.
