A Kansas City, Kan., man faces felony charges for recklessly causing an automobile accident on Saturday in Kansas City that killed two passengers in his vehicle including a 2-year-old child, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Derrius L. Tolson faces two counts of Involuntary Manslaughter 1st Degree.*
This crash on Oct. 14, 2023, remains under investigation and other charges are possible.
According to court records, on Oct. 14, 2023, an officer observed in the area of Interstate 435 and Bannister Road two vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed. One of them, a Jeep, ran a red light and crashed into a Honda, ejected that driver, the defendant. It also killed his two passengers, his girlfriend and a 2-year-old child. Data from the airbag control module in the vehicle the defendant was driving showed it was traveling 92-94 mph at impact with the other vehicle in a zone posted at 40 mph.
