Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson today announced felony charges against a Lenexa man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that took place on 12th Street and Grand Boulevard earlier this month.
Tyler Macias has been charged with Involuntary Manslaughter in the 1st Degree and Leaving the Scene of an Accident. *
According to court records, Kansas City police were dispatched to 11th Street and Grand Boulevard on Feb. 3 around 8 p.m. on a reported injury crash involving a pedestrian. The victim was transported to an area hospital where he died as a result of his injuries from the crash.
Video surveillance from a nearby apartment complex shows the victim carrying two white plastic grocery sacks and walking west to east toward the Grand Boulevard crosswalk as the traffic signal had turned red for north and south traffic. A gold four door sedan is seen traveling at a high rate of speed and strikes the victim as he’s crossing the crosswalk. After the vehicle strikes the victim, it’s seen going northbound in the southbound lanes of Grand Boulevard without stopping to check on the pedestrian.
A short time later, officers found the gold four door vehicle abandoned with major damage consistent with the crash observed on surveillance video. The two plastic sacks the pedestrian was carrying were also found embedded in the vehicle.
Officers later were able to track down the defendant as the owner of the vehicle. During his statement, he said he was trying to speed away from a vehicle behind him around the Power and Light District. As he was speeding away reaching up to 60 miles per hour, he saw a man in the crosswalk in his path and struck him. He said he got scared and drove north on Grand Boulevard and abandoned the car.
The defendant is being held on no bond.
*Charges are only accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until the defendant is either found guilty or pleads guilty.
