Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson today announced a Jackson County judge has sentenced a Kansas City man to more than two decades in prison for a fatal shooting that took place last year.
Richard G. Harris was sentenced to 22 years in prison for 2nd Degree Murder. He pled guilty last month.
“Domestic violence far too often escalates and ends in tragedy, as we saw in this case,” said Prosecutor Johnson. “We remain committed to pursuing justice for victims and intervening earlier during cycles of violence to prevent homicides before they happen.”
According to court records, Kansas City police were dispatched to the area of 3200 E. Linwood Blvd. on June 17, 2024, and found a female victim lying in the grass suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. She died in the hospital from the injury a few days later.
Surveillance footage captured the defendant hitting the victim, dragging her, and then shooting her.
Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Mitchell Widener prosecuted the case on behalf of the state.
