Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson today announced a felony charge against a Kansas City man who snatched a purse from an elderly woman downtown last month.
Zachary Locke faces one count of 1st Degree Robbery. *
“My office will never tolerate criminal behavior, especially when it targets our most vulnerable. This defendant is accused of victimizing an elder and public servant in our community, resulting in severe injuries. As a result, the defendant could face anywhere between 10 to 30 years in prison,” said Prosecutor Johnson. “Every person in our community deserves to step outside without fear, especially our elders who have given us so much of themselves. We will continue working with law enforcement to protect our seniors and hold offenders accountable who threaten their safety.”
According to court records, Kansas City police were dispatched near West 12th Street and Central Street on March 24, where they found the victim lying on the sidewalk. She said she was walking when she felt a tug on her purse from behind. She held on to her purse but fell due to the force of the defendant pulling her purse from her. She was taken to an area hospital and sustained multiple broken bones.
Detectives identified the defendant after area canvassing and a review of camera footage. In an interview with detectives, the defendant admitted he stole the victim’s purse and saw her fall to the ground.
The defendant is being held without bond.
*Charges are only accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until the defendant is either found guilty or pleads guilty.
