A 31-year-old Kansas City man faces multiple felony charges in connection with the alleged beating of a child who passed away this morning, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Nathaniel A. Littlefield, dob: 10/09/1984, faces Abuse or Neglect of a Child and two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.*
According to court records, the mother of the 15-month child and his brother were left in Littlefield's care while their mother went to work on May 29, 2016. When she returned, she found the 15-month-old unresponsive. At Children's Mercy Hospital, physicians determined the child was suffering from non-accidental trauma, consistent with child abuse. The child suffered from severe head trauma and a lacerated liver. The defendant told police he hit the child in the head repeatedly, but only to resuscitate him. He also acknowledged he was the only person caring for the children. He returned to their mother's work to pick her up, but left the young children at home unattended.
The 15-month-old child passed away early today from its injuries.
Charges in this case were filed before the child's death. The case remains under investigation.
Prosecutors have requested a bond of $100,000.
