A Jackson County judge sentenced today a former nurse in an Independence hospital to 20 years in a Missouri prison for the rape of a patient, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
In November, a judge convicted Chukwuemeka U. Emmanuel, dob: 12/25/1983, of Rape or Attempted Rape 1st Degree, after a bench trial.
According to court documents filed today, a patient at Centerpoint Hospital in Independence reported to Independence police that she was raped by her nurse, who police identified as the defendant. The victim told police the nurse had been cleaning her when he inserted his fingers and his penis into her vagina. At the time, the patient was being given morphine and other narcotics for pain management. The victim said she told the defendant several times that he was hurting her and she asked him to stop. Another nurse at Centerpoint, who told police she is in a relationship with the defendant, stated that the defendant called her and told her he was going to Nigeria because he had been accused of a rape. She believed he was in New York or Nigeria.
Assistant Prosecuting Attorneys Devin Ledom and Kelsey Blackwell prosecuted the case on behalf of the state of Missouri.
