Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson today announced charges against a Polo, Missouri man for shattering numerous car windows in downtown Kansas City earlier this month.
Daniel Keil was charged with two counts of Property Damage in the 1st Degree and two counts of Property Damage in the 2nd Degree. *
According to court records, Kansas City police were dispatched to a parking lot in downtown Kansas City on property damage in progress on Feb. 2. Witnesses reported the defendant had broken several car windows and fled north of the location. Officers located the defendant at Truman Road and Main Street and took him into custody. Officers found numerous vehicles in the parking lot with damaged windows.
Missouri law requires each individual property damage incident to exceed $750 in damages to qualify as a felony offense. Damages below this threshold must be charged as misdemeanors. Four victims provided documented damage estimates, allowing the Prosecutor’s Office to file appropriate charges based on the estimated damage to their windows. Detectives are working on getting damage information from more victims.
“Property crime creates significant financial hardship and inconvenience for far too many in our community,” said Prosecutor Johnson. “We appreciate the victims who came forward and documented their damages, which was crucial in ensuring appropriate charges are filed. Our office remains committed to holding property crime offenders accountable and will continue to work collaboratively with law enforcement to prosecute these cases to the fullest extent of the law.”
*Charges are only accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until the defendant is either found guilty or pleads guilty.
