Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson today announced felony charges against two Kansas City men in connection with a fatal shooting that took place outside a south Kansas City gas station earlier this month.
K’Vontaye Redmond and Lamont Buchanan each face one count of 2nd Degree Murder and one count of Armed Criminal Action. *
According to court records, Kansas City police responded to a gas station near East 63rd Street and Blue Parkway Drive on May 10 and located a male victim suffering from apparent trauma. He was later pronounced deceased at an area hospital.
Video footage revealed the victim exiting the store when Buchanan grabbed him and pointed a firearm at him. Redmond stood behind Buchanan and pulled a firearm from his pocket. The victim attempted to back up and produced a firearm but dropped it as Buchanan fired at him. Redmond pointed his firearm at the victim as he lay on the ground. Buchanan picked up the victim’s firearm and both defendants fled the scene.
Redmond is being held on a $100,000 bond. Buchanan is being held without bond.
*Charges are only accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until the defendant is either found guilty or pleads guilty.
