A Jackson County judge last Friday sentenced a Kansas City man to 25 years in prison for a shooting that injured a Kansas City police officer, Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson announced today.
Dwayne Barnes pleaded guilty to two counts of Unlawful Use of a Weapon, two counts of Armed Criminal Action, and two counts of Assault in the Second Degree.
According to court records, officers pulled over a car for expired tags on April 8, 2024. When the officers observed the defendant, they determined he was operating the vehicle while under the influence.
As officers attempted to place the defendant under arrest for driving under the influence, the defendant resisted and fired a handgun he had concealed under his shirt, striking one officer in the arm.
Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Joel E. Ritchie prosecuted the case on behalf of the state of Missouri.
