The grandson of a Blue Springs homicide victim faces a felony charge of 1st Degree Murder in connection with the death of that victim, Harvey C. Baldwin, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.

Tyreik Baldwin, dob: 6/26/1996, faces Murder 1st Degree, Domestic Assault 1st Degree, Armed Criminal Action and Stealing a Motor Vehicle.*

According to court records filed today, the defendant and his grandfather and another family member had argued recently over issues, including the defendant's spilling of sugar in the house. According to a family member, the defendant sneaked up on the family member and struck him in the head with a hammer before he stole his truck. When Blue Springs police responded to the residence in Blue Springs, they found the family member bleeding. That family member told police he had become worried about the defendant's grandfather after he tried to find him in the house; he called Harvey Baldwin, but he didn't answer. Officers also did not immediately find the grandfather, Harvey C. Baldwin. But Harvey's body was eventually found in a chest freezer. Police put out an advisory to find the stolen vehicle. They quickly learned that the defendant had used a debit card at a Lee's Summit gasoline station, and money had been retrieved from an ATM by use of the family member's debit card. The defendant was then stopped on Interstate 470, after he fled police. Police used stop sticks to halt the defendant. Police reported the defendant showed no emotion when told of his grandfather's death.

Prosecutors requested a $250,000 bond.
