A Jackson County jury today convicted Reginald Jones Jr. in connection with the December 2017 fatal shooting of a store employee at LP's Grocery in Kansas City, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Reginald Jones Jr., 1/27/1999, was convicted of Murder 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action in connection with the fatal shooting of Darryl Singleton, dob: 11/16/1960. The jury also acquitted the defendant of the murder of his father, Regional Jones Sr., dob: 5/31/1981.
After rendering the verdict, the jury recommended that Jones be sentenced to up to 33 years in prison -- 20 years for the Murder 2nd Degree conviction and 13 years for the Armed Criminal Action conviction. A hearing in which a judge will declare a sentence at a later date.
According to court records, Kansas City police were dispatched to the LP's Grocery in the 4500 block of E. 24th Street in Kansas City. They found two victims on the sidewalk. They had suffered gunshot wounds. One was pronounced dead at the scene, where 12 spent shell casings were found. The victims were Darryl Singleton, dob: 11/16/1960, and Reginald E. Jones Sr, dob: 5/31/1981, the defendant's father. A relative told police that the defendant and his father had been in an argument. A witness told police he heard the argument. Singleton, who was an employee at the store, had been outside smoking when the defendant fired shots. A witness identified the defendant as the shooter. Video surveillance capture the incident, showing the defendant shooting Jones as he tried to re-enter the store, before he also turned and fired at Singleton.
