Two Kansas City men, just 17 and 19 years old, have been charged in conneciton with a shooting on Wednesday near 27th and VanBrunt in Kansas City, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today. One of the defendants was seriously wounded in the shooting.

Romahn M. Burgin, dob: 9/3/1999, of Kansas City, and Brandon A. Cotton, dob: 5/11/1997, of Kansas City, each face Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Armed Criminal Action charges.*

According to court records filed today, Kansas City police officers responded to a reported shooting on E. 39th Street at Chelsea Street on Wednesday afternoon. They found defendant Cotton suffering from gunshot wounds. The other suspect, Burgin, was applying pressure to Cotton's wounds. Surveillance video confirmed witness statements to police that the defendants got out of their vehicle and walked to a van parked nearby. Cotton had a rifle, pointed it at the driver's side window and shot into the van. Burgin told police he set up a robbery at 27th and Van Brunt. Cotton had told him his job was to district the occupants of the van when they approached. As he approached, Burgin said Cotton put a rifle into the driver's window and point it at driver. Shots were fired from someone inside the van and Cotton told him he had been shot. Burgin and Cotton left the scene until they pulled over near 39th and Chelsea. Burgin told police he threw away the gun before they arrived.

Cotton suffered life threatening injuries. Prosecutors requested a bond of $100,000 for each defendant.
